Terms of Service
Last updated: August 20, 2026
Welcome to ownthread
These Terms of Service (“Terms”) govern your use of ownthread, a service for designing and ordering your own clothes, operated by Lantern Reader, Inc. (“we,” “us,” “our”). By creating an account, saving a design, or placing an order, you agree to these Terms. If you don’t agree, please don’t use the service.
We’ve tried to keep this readable and human. If you have questions, email us at hello@ownthread.com.
What ownthread does
ownthread helps you imagine a garment and make it real. You describe a piece (and optionally add reference images), and we:
- Generate design concepts and renders using AI
- Help you refine fit, fabric, artwork, and construction choices
- Have a human technical designer review your design before anything goes to production
- Arrange manufacturing of your piece with our production partners and ship it to you
ownthread is designed for making clothes for yourself. It’s not meant for bulk data harvesting, reselling our design outputs at scale, or anything that would make us nervous if we found out about it.
Your account
ownthread accounts are passwordless — your email address is your identity, and you sign in with single-use email links. When you use ownthread:
- You must provide an accurate email address you control.
- You’re responsible for the security of your email inbox, since email links grant access to your account.
- You’re responsible for all activity under your account.
- You must be at least 13 years old to use ownthread.
If we suspect your account is being abused or violates these Terms, we may suspend or terminate it.
Acceptable use
ownthread is a small operation run by humans who want to build something sustainable. Please don’t:
- Abuse the service: Don’t hammer our servers, scrape data, or try to circumvent rate limits or spending guards.
- Violate others’ rights: Don’t upload or request designs that infringe copyrights, trademarks, or rights of publicity — no counterfeits, no knock-off logos, no using someone’s likeness without permission.
- Request harmful content: Don’t create designs that are hateful, harassing, or illegal.
- Harm the platform: Don’t upload malware, spam, or attempt to hack ownthread.
- Misrepresent yourself: Don’t impersonate others or create fake accounts.
We may decline to produce, publish, or ship any design at our discretion, including designs we believe infringe others’ rights or violate these Terms. If you’re not sure whether something is okay, ask us first.
Your designs & intellectual property
You keep ownership of what you bring: your prompts, your uploaded images, and your creative direction. You’re responsible for having the rights to anything you upload.
By using ownthread, you grant us a license to:
- Process your prompts and uploads (including through third-party AI providers) to generate and refine your designs
- Use your design specifications with manufacturing partners to produce garments you order
- Display designs you explicitly publish or share, on their public pages
The ownthread interface, logo, code, and design tooling are owned by Lantern Reader, Inc. You can’t copy, modify, or redistribute them without permission.
Sharing & remixing
Sharing is optional. A design becomes public when you create a share link or publish it to your maker page; the public page shows a frozen copy of the design, and others can view and save it. Some links also allow remixing — a remix creates a separate design that doesn’t touch yours. Remix permission is set when a link is created (links shared from the design flow allow it), and once granted it stays with that link, including if you later publish the same design to your maker page. Your email, chat history, fit references, and original artwork files are never part of a public page.
You can unpublish a design from your maker page at any time. A share link serves a frozen copy of the design to anyone who has the link; if you want a share link taken down entirely, email us and we’ll remove it. Remixes others made while a design was shared are their own separate designs and may persist.
AI-generated designs
ownthread uses AI models to generate design concepts and renders. While we strive for accuracy:
- Renders are concept images, not photographs of a finished product. The real garment may differ in color, drape, texture, and detail.
- Pricing shown during design is an estimate; the final quote comes after human technical review.
- A human designer reviews every order before production precisely because AI output is imperfect — use your judgment too.
Orders, deposits & refunds
Every garment is made to order. Here’s how the money works:
- Deposits: When deposits are offered, you can reserve an order with a refundable deposit (currently 10% of the estimate maximum), processed by Stripe. The deposit is credited in full toward the final garment price.
- Refund window: A deposit remains fully refundable until we place your order with a factory or sample shop. After production begins, custom-made goods cannot generally be cancelled.
- Final quote: Nothing goes to production, and no further amount is charged, until a technical designer reviews the design and you approve the final quote.
- Problems with your piece: If a garment arrives defective or materially different from the approved design, contact us and we’ll make it right — by remake, repair, or refund.
Because every piece is custom-made for you, we can’t offer returns for preference reasons (fit choices you approved, colors that read differently in person, and so on) — but talk to us; we’d rather have you love the piece.
Service availability
We work hard to keep ownthread running smoothly, but we can’t guarantee 100% uptime. Servers go down, third-party APIs fail, and sometimes we push a buggy update. We’ll do our best to fix issues quickly, but we’re not liable for downtime, data loss, or other service interruptions.
Termination
You can stop using ownthread anytime and delete your account yourself — from the Worktable on the web or the Account tab in the app — or ask us by email (see the Privacy Policy). When your account is deleted, your designs and data are permanently removed, except anonymized aggregates and records we’re legally required to keep; anonymous designs that carry only your email address have the address removed rather than being deleted. Orders already in production are completed and remain payable.
We can terminate your account if you violate these Terms. If that happens, we’ll notify you and explain why (unless doing so would create legal or security risks).
Disclaimers & limitations
Here’s the legal fine print:
ownthread is provided “as is” without warranties of any kind. We don’t guarantee that it will be error-free, secure, or always available. You use it at your own risk.
We’re not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of ownthread. Our total liability is limited to the amount you’ve paid us in the past 12 months (or $100, whichever is greater). This doesn’t limit the order remedies described above.
Some jurisdictions don’t allow these limitations, so they may not apply to you.
Indemnification
If you do something with ownthread that gets us sued — like ordering a counterfeit design or uploading artwork you don’t have rights to — you agree to cover our legal costs and damages. Don’t make us regret building this thing.
Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms occasionally as ownthread evolves. When we do, we’ll update the “Last updated” date at the top and notify you via email if the changes are significant. Continued use of ownthread means you accept the updated Terms. If you disagree, you can stop using the service and ask us to delete your account.
Governing law & disputes
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Delaware, USA, without regard to conflict of law principles. Any disputes will be resolved in the state or federal courts located in Delaware.
We’d much rather resolve disputes amicably. If you have a problem, email us at hello@ownthread.com before lawyering up.
Miscellaneous
- Entire agreement: These Terms (plus our Privacy Policy) constitute the entire agreement between you and Lantern Reader, Inc.
- Severability: If any part of these Terms is found invalid, the rest remains in effect.
- No waiver: If we don’t enforce a provision, it doesn’t mean we’ve waived our right to enforce it later.
- Assignment: You can’t transfer your account or these Terms to anyone else. We can assign our rights and obligations to a successor entity.
